1. What is Digital Photo Restoration?
In digital restoration we make a computerized copy of your old or damaged
photo by scanning it or photographing it with a digital camera. Then we
use Photo Shop and other imaging programs to correct, hide, or recreate
the image to make it look new again. Them you may have the photo printed
or store on a CD.
2. How do I get my photo to Rosie Lenses
for restoration or alteration?
There are many ways to get your photos to us. The most common are listed
below in order of preference and quality.
a. If you live near Bloomington Indiana give us a call and we can set
up an appointment time for you to bring your photo in. We will give you
a free consultation and estimate and scan your photo while you wait.
b. Scan your own photo as a TIFF file at 300 dpi and the dimensions you
want your final print to be then save it to a disc and mail it to us.
Or save it as a jpeg file and e-mail it to us. Be sure to include a description
of what you want done and your contact info. We will write or e-mail you
back with an estimate and order form before we do any work on your photo.
c. Take your photo to a Kodak Picture Maker, located in most drug stores
or department stores and scan and save your photo to a disc to send to
us. The employees in the photo lab should be able to assist you with this
if you need help.
d. Take a photo of your photo with your digital camera without flash outside
on an overcast day and try to avoid glare or reflections on the photo
surface. Then mail it to us on a disc or via e-mail.
e. Finally you make a paper copy and mail it to us but this may greatly
reduce image quality. Never send us the original photo in the mail! We
cannot be responsible for loss or damage.
3. How do you estimate the cost of a restoration
or alteration job?
Estimates are based on many factors.
a. The first of course is difficulty. The more difficult the job the more
time it takes. Factors that increase difficulty is damage that blocks
portions of the image or when parts of the image are missing or so faded
that they have to be recreated.
b. The cost to recreate portions of the image can be off set if there
are other images available to help fill in the gaps.
c. When altering an image it is always easier to put two similar images
together than to work with photos that are very different in lighting,
setting, or age. So whenever you know you want a person to be added or
taken out or even just altered a bit, take extra pictures in the same
place and lighting whenever possible. This will greatly reduce your cost.
d. Discounts are available for non-for-profit museums and for unique jobs
that we can add to our portfolio and advertising.
